Save the Great Apes

They Urgently Need Your Help

The great apes - gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos, and orangutans — are our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. We are captivated by their expressive faces and complex family lives, yet we threaten their world with poaching and habitat destruction. We share their vulnerability to deadly diseases such as Ebola and tuberculosis, and we are the key to protecting them. They need your help.

With your support, WCS will help preserve crucial habitats necessary to support great apes by combining sound science with effective local action to create conservation solutions. Our teams are dedicated to making real change on the ground and gaining positive results in protecting these vital species.

Please donate today. Your gift will have an important impact — it is an investment in the future of some of the world’s most amazing animals.

Changing the Great Ape Landscape: How WCS Gets Results

WCS is the only organization with ongoing conservation programs for all four known gorilla subspecies and all of the other great apes. In some of the most difficult and dangerous terrain in Central Africa, our researchers are protecting gorillas, chimpanzees, and bonobos from Uganda to Gabon.

In Malaysia, where the orangutan is critically endangered, WCS is working with government officials to end illegal hunting and has proposed new habitat protection for these extraordinary primates.

In the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), WCS is securing mountain gorilla habitat in Virunga National Park. And in the past year alone, two new National Parks for Cross River and western lowland gorillas have been created in Cameroon with WCS support.

Cutting-Edge Science

WCS veterinarians are helping to develop and deliver a vaccine for Ebola, which promises real protection for gorillas and chimpanzees caught in the path of this deadly disease.

Conservation Solutions

During years of civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, dedicated WCS workers remained in the field to help preserve Grauer’s gorillas. Today WCS is actively supporting law enforcement and anti-poaching activities, and restoring the integrity of areas devastated by conflicts and mining for gold, tin, and coltan — a mineral essential to cell phone production.

Local Action

Despite official protection, the orangutan is threatened by extinction. WCS is developing more sensitive agricultural practices that will increase the amount of habitat where orangutans can survive. In Nigeria, WCS conservationists are working with local people living near Cross River gorilla habitat to bring home the importance of protecting these critically endangered primates.

With your help, WCS will continue to ensure the future of all the world’s great apes. Please donate now.
